Applying for a Tax File Number
A tax file number (TFN) is a unique nine-digit number issued to individuals and organisations to help administer tax and other Australian Government systems.
You are issued one TFN during your lifetime, even if you change your circumstances.

You can apply for a Tax File Number 2 ways - online or by completing a hard copy application form.

Visit the Australia Post Locator to find a participating retail outlet near you. To complete your application, you must attend an interview to present your proof of identity documents within 30 days.
You can either book an appointment or simply attend a participating Australia Post retail outlet for an interview. Bookings are not essential.
Don't forget to take your printed application summary as well as original proof of identity documents to your interview.
If you're unable to attend an interview at a participating Australia Post outlet, there are other ways to register for a TFN. You will need to complete a paper form Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals. You can get a copy of this form by ordering online or phoning 1300 720 092 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Signature Requirements if you are:
16 years old or over – you must sign your application (if you are unable to sign your application, refer to Protected Persons).
13 to 15 years old – you or your parent or guardian can sign your application.
12 years old or under – your parent or guardian must sign the application on your behalf.
If you are a parent or guardian signing on behalf of a TFN Recipient who is under 16, you will need to provide all of the following:
- two proof of identity documents for the TFN Recipient,
- your own TFN in the online form (or three proof of identity documents for yourself)
- a proof of eligibility document.
