2015 – Science Week Celebration Night  (August 2015)

The 2015 theme was ‘making waves – the Science of light', and we took this idea to the next level! To celebrate the awesome theme, the Science Faculty hosted a Celebration Night where we opened our doors to students and the community to showcase some breathtaking phenomenon. And naturally, as it was all about light, we held it in the dark! Some of the activities included:

  • The chance to look through some HUGE telescopes at the moon, Saturn and other wonders in our sky.
  • Huge fiery demonstrations including a fire tornado of multiple colours and sparks flying!
  • The room of hologram. Some students actually made these in class during the week.
  • The chance to create a wave formation out of lollies.
  • The night was a huge success, we had a bumper crowd, and hopefully we inspired many budding scientists.

Excursions

The Science Faculty are proud to have run many excursions over the past few years. Every single time we take LMHS students away, we have been so impressed with the high levels of maturity demonstrated. Below are just some of the excursions we have attended in the past.

  • Luna Park – this excursion exposes stage 5 students to first hand examples of Newtons 3 laws of motion. Some manage to experience them ‘better' than others. Just a hint for anyone going in future, DON'T each lunch and go on the rotor!
  • Taronga Zoo Snooze – this excursion allows stage 4 students to see animals up close and personal with an exciting chance to ‘sleep to the sounds of the wild'. This excursion is always a hit; just make sure you don't stay up too late!

Armidale – UNE HSC Booster Days – College Science students are given this generous opportunity to experience life at university first hand, where they get to attend classes in the actually university laboratories, meet with university demonstrators, eat and sleep like university students. UNE provides us with food and accommodation for free, so this is a very cost effective excursion. Armidale is the talk of the seniors for months after, many actually choose a Science subject the next year just for the chance to go again!

  • 'Build ME a future day - Newcastle University. Students are invited to participate in a variety of Science and Engineering Challenges where they compete against other schools. This day is very exciting for the students and our school traditionally does very well. Photos of this event can be found in the photos page.
